Data ONTAP operating in 7-Mode, under certain conditions, allows unauthorized information disclosure or modification on volumes that have ".UTF-8" appended to the volume language.

Fixed under bug 954424.

Workarounds

Removing UTF-8 from the volume language will mitigate this vulnerability, but might have undesired side effects such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Some filenames may display non-ASCII characters on clients.
  • NFSv3 clients may see non- ASCII characters if the filename previously used multi-byte characters.
  • NFSv4 and CIFS clients may see unexpected filenames when NFSv4 clients create files or directories with non-ASCII characters.

NetApp recommends that the impact of any changes be evaluated in a test environment prior to production deployment.
